Music in the Glen 2: A Weekend of Traditional Music in Glendalough
Last years residential participants enjoying the Wicklow countryside!
Following the success of last year's inaugural event, Music in the Glen is back! Music Generation Wicklow is thrilled to invite young traditional musicians aged 14–18 from Wicklow and neighbouring counties to join us for an immersive weekend of music-making, ensemble playing, and informal sessions.
Mark your calendars for our two-day residential programme taking place in the stunning surroundings of Glendalough on 14–15 November 2026.
What to Expect
Designed for young musicians playing at an intermediate level or above, Music in the Glen 2 offers a unique opportunity to push your musicianship to the next level. Over the course of the weekend, you will explore new repertoire, build confidence in collaborative playing, and connect with fellow young trad players.
Working alongside Music Generation Wicklow's experienced Musician Educators, participants will dive into:
Instrumental Workshops: Hone your technique and learn new material in a focused setting.
Ensemble Rehearsals: Learn the intricacies of playing as a cohesive group and arranging traditional tunes.
Coached Performances: Get expert feedback to elevate your live playing and stage presence.
Focus on Session Skills
A core part of traditional Irish music is the session, and this residential places a special emphasis on giving you the tools to thrive in one. Our educators will guide you through crucial session skills, giving you the confidence to participate independently in traditional music sessions anywhere. You will focus on:
Sharing and introducing tunes to a group
Leading sets with strong rhythm and clear cues
Listening and responding dynamically to other musicians
The Evening Session
The learning doesn't stop when the workshops end. The residential provides plenty of opportunities for informal, organic music-making. A highlight of the weekend is our evening session, where participants can put their developing skills into practice in a relaxed, supportive environment. It is the perfect chance to share the tunes you've learned, start a set, and experience the pure joy of playing together.
